    Description

    I just purchased this vintage Metlox Pottery tureen top (only) from a local estate here in Central Virginia. The piece was produced under their "Poppytrail" tradename in the "California Provincial" pattern first introduced in 1952. The hen on nest design is well executed with crisp mold and nice embossed detail to the bird's facial features / plumage. The underglaze hand painting shows rich color and excellent coverage. The piece has a striking presence measuring 11" long , 9" wide and about 5" deep. This top piece in very good condition with the only issue being a pinhead flake / slip bubble opening on one tail feather edge, as pictured.  The large  tureen is one of the hardest pieces to find in this pattern.  Sadly the bottom piece is missing, but this top would be a nice replacement find.  I do have the ladle for this tureen listed in a separate auction this week.
